Mervi Hjelmroos-Koski

Mervi is the coordinator for Denver Botanic Gardens’ Certificate in Botanical Art and Illustration program. She is a botanist with a Ph.D. in quaternary biology and a D.Sc. in palynology (study of contemporary and fossil pollen, spores and other palynomorphs). She is world recognized in her field of research and has been strongly involved in higher education in Europe, Australia and in the U.S., she is currently in the faculty of University of Colorado in Boulder. Because of her profession and the work she has done in image analysis, she appreciates the value of Botanical Illustration in science. Mervi is convinced that technology does not compete with human interpretation of the subject. Mervi teaches Botany for Botanical Illustrator, Graphite and courses involving microscopic techniques. She is organizing CafĂ© Botanique and also maintains the website for the Botanical Illustration. Mervi completed the botanical illustration certificate program in 2006, her art can be found in books and private collections.
