Sister Bee speakers

Suzanne Connolly Howes has taught science and outdoor environmental education since 1983. She fell in love with bees watching three feral hives on a ranch in California and started keeping bees in Colorado in 1987. Ms. Connolly Howes graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Colorado with a degree in Environmental Conservation. She teaches The Ecology of Bees for the Master Beekeeping class sponsored by the Boulder County Extension each fall.

Julie Finley is the Beekeeper, Greenhouse Director and Volunteer Coordinator for Growing Gardens. Growing Gardens enriches lives through sustainable gardening and beekeeping programs that empower people to experience a direct and deep connection with plants, the land and each other. Tom Theobald is the owner of the Niwot Honey Farm. Tom is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin. He began beekeeping after 10 years in the corporate world. He was the last County Bee Inspector in Colorado, a position created in 1891 and retired in 2000 and he has been a commercial beekeeper for 34 years. Tom was one of the founders of the Boulder County Beekeepers Association and served as its president for 30 years. He writes a weekly column called Notes From The Beeyard for The Fence Post Magazine.

Laura Tyler is an artist and beekeeper. Her work explores plant and animal forms in a multimedia practice that includes encaustic painting and documentary filmmaking. She is the producer and director of the documentary film, Sister Bee and co-founder of the honey company, Backyard Bees, LLC. She attended college at Washington University in St. Louis and the Massachusetts College of Art earning a BFA from the latter in 1993. This is her ninth season keeping bees.
