Seed Saving is as old or older than agriculture itself. The practices begun by our ancestors have given us a diverse heritage of vegetable, herb, and flower varieties, and it is up to current and future generations to preserve and cultivate them. Come learn the skill of saving your own seeds to regenerate this ancient and essential practice and to increase local self-sufficiency. Local adaptation of food crop seed resources is the corner stone of an effective local food system. In this workshop we will cover growing methods, pollination characteristics, methods of processing seeds, and seed storage and resources. We will also discuss the threat posed by genetic engineering/modification to global seed resources and how to assess this threat at the local level.
“Within the permaculture movement, the saving of seed – especially of old, local and rare varieties abandoned by agribusiness – has inspired activists, connected them to networks of seed savers, and reawakened a cultural practice fundamental to future survival”. ~ David Holmgren
