Rough and Tumble Road Trips: Tipis and Tundra: Wyoming's Bighorn Mountains July 8-12, 2009

July 08, 8:00 AM-7:00 PM
Denver Botanic Gardens

$995.00 (Member) / $1085.00 (Non member)

Head into the majestic Bighorn Mountains for gorgeous views, unique alpine plants and a visit to the powerful Medicine Wheel site. Spend a full day hiking and botanizing in the beautiful Bighorns with Denver Botanic Gardens’ two alpine plant experts, Mike Kintgen (horticulturist in charge of our famous Rock and Alpine Garden) and Senior horticulturist Mark Fusco who designed and installed the world’s highest rock garden at Mount Goliath. After this brief mountain adventure, enjoy a raucous detour to Cody for a slice of the “real” West. On the way across the plains, we will make a short detour into the Pryor Mountains to look for wild Spanish mustangs (and more native plants of course!). In Cody, enjoy a guided tour of the newly re-installed Plains Indian Museum with curator Emma Hansen at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center (the “Smithsonian of the West”) and spend an evening at the Cody Nite Rodeo. Our trip will conclude with a stay in Thermopolis at the mouth of the breathtaking Wind River Canyon, where we will visit the largest dinosaur dig in the United States and relax in the area’s mineral hot springs. On the drive home, take in some roadside Americana with a stop for malts at the world famous Yellowstone Drug in Shoshoni (featured on Roadfood.com, where it states they sold a record 727 shakes in one day in 2000!) and a visit to Hell’s Half Acre – featured in the movie Starship Troopers and listed on Roadside America.com’s website of offbeat tourist attractions – before your return to civilization.

Trip fee includes van transportation from Denver, lodging and 3 meals a day. Personal chef Debbie Whittaker of Herb Gourmet will accompany us on this trip and provide home-cooked meals on the go (please specify in advance if you have any dietary restrictions).
Lodging: Cabins and motels (we will be changing locations each night on this trip)
