Dan’s trips around the world have exposed him to an amazing array of wild containers planted with the most unusual plants. Dan will cover these as well as a wide assortment of unusual plant materials that give new life to containers. Tips on how to design containers and small garden spaces as well as helpful information on maintaining soil fertility and plant health are provided.
Since 1974, Dan Heims has been deeply involved in horticulture. He is currently the president of Terra Nova Nurseries, a company noted for its many new plant introductions. Dan’s articles and photography have appeared in a number of gardening magazines — including American Gardener, Garden Design, and Horticulture. He has taught horticulture courses, distributed and sold exotic plants, and runs his own “design and build” landscape business. Dan’s perennial breeding programs have produced many international gold and silver medal winners. He has spoken around the United States and in Japan, England, New Zealand, Costa Rica, Germany, Holland, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, Tasmania, Australia, and Canada. He hosted a weekly gardening show on radio KKSN in Portland and has appeared on American, Swedish, and British television. Dan’s garden has been featured in Sunset Magazine, Organic Gardening, and Better Homes and Gardens. Dan considers himself to be the original “hortiholic.” Though a great deal of his time is spent traveling, Dan is quick to say, “The more I travel, the more I stay in Portland, Oregon. I love my life here.” He spends his free time with his family and as a professional photographer, puts in many hours snapping images of his beloved friends, family, plants, and travels. Dan resides in Portland, Oregon.
