Pat Hayward, Executive Director of Plant Select, will begin this evening’s program with a rollout of the 2010 Plant Select winners, as well as give a sneak peek of some potential plants for 2011.
Then, sit back and enjoy an armchair journey to the mountains of Kazakhstan and Mongolia! For three weeks in June and July of this past year, Mike Bone of Denver Botanic Gardens explored the Altai Mountains in far eastern Kazakhstan and Westernmost Mongolia on behalf of the Plant Select program. This region lies at the very heart of Asia, equidistant from the Indian, Arctic, Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The continental, steppe climate is very close to the Rockies, and many of the plants are closely allied to our native flora. In this talk he will share observations on the rich Asian flora and these distant but very relevant places: he was especially struck with the many brilliant blue gentians, columbines and dragonheads (Dracocephalum) and the many potentially valuable perennials with which the region is endowed. He will be returning to this amazing region in the fall to collect seed from over 120 kinds of Asian plants that may one day be featured in Plant Select.
